“One of a Kind“ Wire Sculptures
Each piece is a “One of a Kind“ hand crafted and sculptured from copper wire and braid mounted on a natural slate base. Many sizes and tree types are available along with a variety of base materials to enhance any décor. Commissioned pieces are always welcomed.
Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination?
For the most part I work from a basic concept and allow my creations to develop on their own. I rarely structure a piece rigidly and tend to permit the work to evolve in its own time and with its own statement. Occasionally I may refer to photograph or image, most times a visual experience and always a subject from the natural world.
What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you?
I believe what inspires me greatly is the realization that the environment in which we live, that man-made element of concrete, glass and structure, is stifling our ability to relate with our natural surroundings … the way the creator intended the world to be …
Where do you do your work?
One of the most important elements for an artist is having a “space “ , a refuge … if you will where one is comfortable and detached from the world as we live it.
Our lives, in these progressive and sometimes disturbing times is constantly bombarded by outside influence … the media, work commitments, noise and the general overtones of the society in which we live. In order to enter my creative element I need to escape from these distractions and focus on inspiration from within.
This place … for me, is affectionately labeled … The Dungeon.
A sanctuary, located in my home … yes in the basement, strategically located as far away from the telephone, television and yes, even the light of day . It’s here where I draw upon my imagination and life experiences as a base of operation.
Where do you feel art is going?
I endeavor to utilize as much natural medium in my work as possible. A “green “ approach, by recycling and re-using materials into a new form. That unique chuck of wood or stone often collected from the shores of the Grand River during walks with my partner.
What is the role of the artist in society?
I’m never sure when an idea will come to mind. I am simply aware that there is far too much un-noticed splendor surrounding us all and my personal mission is to draw that to mind in hope that others may take a moment to pay homage to our natural surroundings
